I believe there are two types of professionals in this world: those who wait for opportunities to arrive, and those who hunt them down, learn everything they can, and never stop growing.
When I first stepped into the hair industry, I was the second type—an extremely driven, overly ambitious newcomer determined to make my mark. I didn’t have a “Plan B.” I didn’t believe in waiting my turn. I believed in working my way up faster than anyone else thought was possible.
That meant sacrifice.
It meant taking on two jobs without a single day off.
Not because I needed more income, but because I needed more knowledge.
The Sacrifices That Shape You
While my friends went out on weekends, I was on the salon floor, learning new techniques, observing customer behavior, and asking endless questions. I wanted to understand the business inside out , every service, every client interaction, every challenge.
At the time, I didn’t realize that those endless conversations with customers were teaching me the psychology of buying, the art of connection, and the foundations of sales. That’s the thing about learning: sometimes, you don’t see the value until years later.
The Power of Admitting You Don’t Know
One of the biggest reasons I grew fast was because I wasn’t afraid to admit, “I don’t know this.” Ego keeps people stagnant. Humility and a willingness to learn, keeps you moving forward.
Every time I faced a gap in my knowledge, I filled it. Every time I made a mistake, I learned from it. Every challenge was an upgrade waiting to happen.
Seventeen Years Later…
Fast forward 17 years, and that hunger hasn’t gone away. I’m still obsessed with learning. I still believe in pushing myself. But I’ve also learned the importance of balance, knowing when to pause, reflect, and recharge.
The difference now is gratitude. Gratitude for the sleepless nights, the missed parties, the endless hours spent learning instead of resting—because all of it built the professional I am today.
Why You Should Be Obsessed Too
The truth is, industries change. Markets shift. Skills that are relevant today may be outdated tomorrow. The only way to stay ahead is to keep evolving. If you’re not learning, you’re falling behind. If you’re not growing, you’re shrinking.
Your obsession with learning will become your competitive edge. It will open doors that talent alone cannot. It will make you resilient when times get tough.
So, be shamelessly obsessed with your growth. Ask questions. Seek mentors. Read. Listen. Experiment. Fail forward. And when people think you’re “too much,” understand that it’s exactly that intensity that will get you to the next level.
Because your career doesn’t grow unless you do !
